How to Renew Your DPO Certificate: A Comprehensive Guide

How to Renew Your DPO Certificate: A Comprehensive Guide

Your Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) certificate is a cornerstone of your maritime career, validating your specialist skills and commitment to safety in complex offshore operations. However, this certification has a five-year validity period. Keeping it current is not just a regulatory formality for compliance; it’s essential for your professional standing and continued employment on DP-class vessels.

The revalidation process is managed by The Nautical Institute (The NI), which has established clear requirements to ensure all DPOs remain current with industry standards. These pathways are designed to accommodate DPOs with varying levels of recent sea time experience, including an alternative route through a dedicated Revalidation Course.

In this guide, we’ll provide you with the key requirements to renew your DPO Certificate, walking you through a transparent, step-by-step process. Our goal is to help you meet all requirements efficiently and achieve a successful outcome.

Key Takeaways

  • The standard renewal route requires a minimum of 150 days of DP sea time in the past five years.
  • If you don’t meet the sea time requirement, you can complete the DP Revalidation / Refresher & Competency Assessment Course.
  • Company confirmation letters must follow NI’s format, confirming your DP days, employment dates, and vessel details.
  • All applications are processed online through the Nautical Institute’s Alexis platform.

Key Requirements for Renewal

Before beginning your application, you must confirm that you meet the core criteria. This requires meticulous documentation of your knowledge and skills.

1. DP Sea Time or DP Refresher & Competency Assessment Course

The primary method for renewal is through accumulated sea time. You must prove you have completed a minimum of 150 days of DP sea time within the preceding five years. However, if you have not managed to accumulate it, you will need to take a DP Revalidation Course.

This course has been developed to ensure all DPOs remain current with the industry’s evolving standards. The contents of this course are closely aligned with the DP Refresher and Competency Assessment Course, and the NI has merged them into a single, comprehensive program. This combined course is now officially known as the DP Revalidation / DP Refresher and Competency Assessment Course, which streamlines the training process for both participants and approved centres. Simply said, if a training centre is approved for the Revalidation course, it is also approved for the DP Refresher and Competency Assessment course.

The course is intended for individuals who have already been issued a DPO Certificate from The NI but are unable to revalidate their DPO Certificate due to insufficient DP sea time. The overall course aim is to update the DPOs with the latest rules and regulations, position references and sensors, known DP incidents and lessons learned.

Minimum Entry Qualification Requirement

  • Course Timing & Validity: The course may be completed up to 12 months before your certificate’s revalidation date. The course completion certificate is valid for a period of 12 months only. You must submit your final application to The NI within this timeframe.
  • DP Sea Time Rules for Enrollment
    • First-Time Course Takers: If this is the first time you are using the course to revalidate, there is no minimum DP sea time requirement to attend.
    • Subsequent Course Takers: If you have already used this course to revalidate in the past, you must have a minimum of 28 DP sea time days to be eligible. This time can be completed either before or after taking the course.
  • Reset” Option: If a DPO uses the course to revalidate and then subsequently gains the full 150 DP sea time days for their next renewal, they are once again eligible to take the Revalidation Course in the future with no minimum sea time requirement.

Number of Hours

A minimum of 34 hours of teaching and simulator time is required for this course, which includes the time needed for the examination and assessments. The course must schedule both practical and theoretical aspects, with about 50% of the time assigned to each. The course is to be delivered over five days.

What to Expect after a DP Refresher & Competency Assessment Course?

At the end of the course, the student should:

  1. Have acquired knowledge of the latest rules and regulations.
  2. Have acquired knowledge of the latest developments within sensors and PRS.
  3. Have acquired knowledge of the latest relevant DP incidents and why they occurred.
  4. Be able to recognise the various alarm, warning and information messages.
  5. Be able to carry out operational planning, risk assessment and hazard identification tasks.
  6. Be able to set up the DP system for a particular task/operation.
  7. Be able to decide on courses of action because of the system’s failure.

Online Assessment

To be awarded a certificate of completion for the Revalidation Course, the DPO must pass an online assessment at the training centre. The exam is composed of multiple-choice questions that have already been developed from the Induction Course and the Simulator Course.

The online assessment will consist of 30 questions and shall be completed in one hour with a pass mark of 70%. Students who fail the first attempt are allowed to have another two attempts within six months of the first attempt; however, the second attempt must be undertaken within 96 hours of the first attempt. If the student fails these three attempts, the student is required to repeat the Revalidation Course and undertake the assessment again.

Practical Assessment

The practical assessment must be done individually. The practical evaluation shall include the following items, which the student must pass to be awarded a certificate of completion for the Revalidation Course:

  • Complete a DP Checklist.
  • Set up the vessel on DP.
  • Move the vessel from the setup position to a worksite.
  • Deal with a system/sensor/thruster failure or environmental change (at least two).

The training centres must develop their practical exams based on the course objectives listed above. The student must pass all four items listed above. The training centre is responsible for ensuring that the assessment is carried out in a professional manner and that the student is assessed with thoroughness in line with the standards of The NI.

2. Confirmation Letters

Your logged DP sea time must be verified through company-issued confirmation letters. This official support documentation must be on company-headed paper and confirm your name, DPO certificate number, dates of employment, and total DP days.

3. The Nautical Institute Online Application

All applications are now processed digitally. To access the Alexis Platform, you will need to create an account, fill in the required details, and upload digital copies of all your documents.

A Step-by-Step Guide to the Renewal Process

Follow these steps for a smooth and successful application. All participants in the scheme should develop a systematic approach.

  1. Check eligibility: Confirm whether you have 150 DP sea time days within the last five years.
  2. Choose your path: If you meet the sea time requirement, prepare for direct application. If not, book the DP Revalidation Course.
  3. Prepare documents: Gather your current DPO certificate, passport copy, logbook pages, company confirmation letters, and course certificate (if applicable).
  4. Apply online: Log in to the Alexis platform, complete the form, upload your documents, and pay the fee.
  5. Complete assessments (if required): Pass the online or simulator exams.
  6. Wait for confirmation: NI typically processes applications in about 4 weeks. You’ll receive an interim confirmation (indemnity letter/QR code) while your documents are being verified.

Common DPO Certificate Pitfalls to Avoid

When preparing for maritime compliance—especially with time-sensitive or international requirements—even minor oversights can result in significant delays or penalties. Understanding these common pitfalls can help professionals stay ahead, avoid rejections, and ensure smooth processing. The table below highlights key mistakes and how to avoid them.

Pitfall What It Is Why It Matters How to Avoid It
